About Viktoriya
Viktoriya (Vika) Rudenko is a Canadian Deaf multidisciplinary artist with more than 40 years of experience in the fine arts. Her practice spans watercolour painting, sculpture, fused glass, glassblowing, and mixed media.
Growing up in Russia and Ukraine, Vika was encouraged to hide her deafness despite her strong artistic identity. After moving to Canada, she reclaimed and embraced her Deaf cultural identity. These experiences continue to shape her artistic practice, which explores communication, identity, connection, and the Deaf experience.
Today, Vika is deeply engaged with the De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art) movement. Through her work, she celebrates Deaf culture, strengthens Deaf representation, and brings Deaf perspectives into the contemporary arts landscape.
Artist Statement
My artistic practice is rooted in Deaf identity, visual communication, and personal experience. Working across watercolour, acrylic painting, glass sculpture, neon, and mixed media, I explore how communication can exist beyond sound.
Gesture, colour, light, movement, and form are central to my work. I am interested in the ways Deaf experience shapes perception, connection, and identity. Through my art, I create visual narratives that invite audiences to encounter communication from a different perspective.
My work also explores accessibility and the relationship between Deaf and hearing worlds, transforming lived experience into visual language and creating space for dialogue, reflection, and human connection.
